Anti-expansion group want Southend Council in court over airport runway extension

Posted on July 28, 2010 at 12:40 PM

A CAMPAIGNER is trying to take Southend Council to court over the decision to allow the extension of the airport runway.

A member of the Stop Airport Expansion Now (SAEN) group, with the backing of other members, has applied to launch a judicial review at the High Court in London.

The legal challenge is against the council’s decision to give planning permission to Southend Airport allowing it to extend its runway by 300m.

SAEN director, Graham Whitehead, said: “Both Southend and Rochford councils have shown total disregard for the interests of their residents and this should never have been approved by the development control committee.

“The council took the decision against the will of the vast majority of the people who responded to the consultation.

“We believe that the planning permission process was legally flawed and we are confident that the court will find in our favour.”

Boris Royal Docks Regeneration

Mayor Boris today launched his vision of the Royal Docks. As you can see its a £billion development. Around the London City Airport runway. Under a flightpath. In a public safety zone. In a noise contour. Genius or Madman? We will go with the latter.

Boris also backed the Fight The Flights campaign for a public review of the changes in the London City Airport flightpath. What ever happened to that?

London City Airport held its "funday" in early July at Thames Barrier Park. A contradiction in itself really as its no longer at the airport and it sounds about as much fun as having a Brazilian Wax in the front window of Debenhams. Monies raised go to Richard House Children's Hospice in Newham.

Unlike last year we also didn't see the release of pictures by the airport using children to promote the A318 to New York which just happen to be the most polluting aircraft per passenger in the British Airways fleet.

Another notable absence this year was vocal Airport supporter "Lord Of The Wings" Mayor of Newham Robin Wales. Wales will happily turn up to the opening of a handbag if it puts him in a good light. Anything to do with Fight The Flights High Court case against Newham and its expansion of London City Airport we wonder?

And while we wait to see how much money was raised for the hospice (not forgetting that London City Airport receives in excess of £5 million pounds in security costs every year from the taxpayer) we wonder what other facts and figures are right and wrong.

The airport themselves press released 20,000 attendees to the event which was published by the local press.

So imagine our surprise when Leslie Edward Events announced with pride on facebook that 7,000 people attended the event.

Methinks that Leslie and her events will be flinging themselves on to the nearest sword very soon and changing their version of facts very soon and reporting the airports more positive figures.

Morning Is Broken.

Hypocrite Trump Blocks Expansion at Airport near home in Florida

Posted on July 23, 2010 at 8:18 AM

Friday 23rd July 2010

It has been revealed that Donald Trump, centre of controversy and headache for environmentalists since 2006, is embroiled in a protest of his own. Trump, who’s planned housing and golf course would “lead directly to airport expansion” (1) has launched a lawsuit in a bid to stop planned expansion at an airport near his home in Florida.

The Celebrity Apprentice boss filed papers in Palm Beach County Circuit Court on Monday, accusing county officials of failing to assess noise and associated pollution from jet engines at Palm Beach International Airport, near his Mar-a-Lago estate and members-only beach club.

The complaint, which also targets the airport's director, Bruce Pelly, aims to block construction of a second runway and prevent planes flying over his properties. Plans for the expansion are currently on hold.

Mr. Trump, who is currently building his golf course on the doorstep of residents who wish to stay in their homes, had even planned to use helicopters to fly guests fromAberdeen Airport to the resort.

Johnny Agnew, 22, from Plane Stupid Scotland says: “This is amazing hypocrisy. Donald Trump has been applauded by Aberdeen Airport and would significantly contribute to its expansion. He has also created a living nightmare for families who don’t know if they will see their next Christmas in their own home. This new information that he is actually fighting to block Airport Expansion near his home shows that he can only act in self-interest and will never benefit Aberdeen. He is simply acting to make big money for himself, and shows complete disregard to the local community suffering and environmental degradation that expansion at Aberdeen Airport would cause.”

Alan Flemming, Aberdeen resident says “For years now we have been opposing Aberdeen Airport expansion because of the greenhouse gas emissions and excessive noise pollution it would cause and Trump has been a driving force. He supports the airport expansion plans as it will allow rich Americans to fly in to his resort and so money to his pocket. To find out he's blocking an airport from expanding in his home town in the states is an outrage to those who have been fighting the proposed expansion at Aberdeen Airport.”
